"I never really considered working for Pixar... Now it’s a dream and a profession!"
E: Do you have any personal project like the Alien Song?
V: I am currently working on a new short film called “Big Bang”. It features new, original characters and will be about 6 minutes long when complete. I’m hoping to finish it within the next year.
E: Has it been useful working for videogames before Pixar? What did you learn?
V: Absolutely. I was working on a lot of pre-rendered graphical adventures, which used tools and processes very similar to those in film production. I got a lot of experience in different areas (such as writing, design, modelling, texturing, lighting, rendering and compositing) that I might not be able to attempt at a large film studio. I also got a chance to direct teams of artists.
E: Is it hard not being part of the creation process of the characters that you have to animate?
V: It’s not hard at all, but I would like the opportunity to be more involved with their creation some day. That said, when new characters arrive in animation at Pixar there is still development to be done. We have to figure out how the character moves in order to further develop his personality, and this is a very creative process.
E: From all the software you have used in all your life, which one you’ll choose?
V: My favorite applications are Photoshop, After Effects and Animation: Master.
E: ¿Do you use a mirror for the facial animations?
V: Yes. I use some sort of reference for all of my animation, whether it is a mirror, video recording, a movie or my own drawings.
E: Do you make the character setup of the characters? If not, would you like to do it?
V: At Pixar all of the models are set up for us by Character TD’s. I do enjoy doing some set up myself, and I’ve had the chance to help rig Pixar characters in the past. I also rig my own characters for personal work.
E: What do you think about the animation made by motion capture (such as Final Fantasy)?
V: Motion capture should only be used for visual effects that are going to be combined with live actors. Otherwise motion capture, while “realistic”, lacks the appeal and stylization of traditional animation techniques.
E: What was your task at TITAN AE?
V: I was a visual effects artist. I worked on some of the shots in the Ice Crystals sequence. I worked with Form-Z, Electric Image and After Effects to create the ships, crystals and backgrounds.
E: EBeing a member of Pixar was like a dream or just a professional goal?
V: I never really considered working for Pixar until after seeing Toy Story 2, and then they contacted me a few weeks later. Now it’s a dream and a profession! I feel very lucky to work there. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also just a job.
E: How many and what kind of projects had your demo reel when you sent it to Pixar?
V: For character animation I only had my 3 alien animations. I also showed a reel with some of my visual effects and games work and some examples of my drawings and paintings.
E: How many animators are working in Pixar nowadays?
V: We have about 60 animators, most of whom are currently working on “The Incredibles”.
E: How are the laboring days at Pixar? Is all as nice as it seems from the outside?
V: This depends on how far into production a movie is. When animation first starts the days may be short and there is not a lot of pressure. Right now we are entering “crunch” time on The Incredibles, so the days are longer and there is more pressure. It’s still fun, though. We are working plenty of overtime, but we rarely have to work on Saturdays.
E: What kind of computers do you use at Pixar?
V: For animation we use Intel workstations running Linux.
E: Being an animator could be stressing, do you guys have any way to disconnect (games, freh air...)?
V: We goof off a lot. We have a stage in our department where lots of animators like to play music. We also have our own bar.
E: Can the animators think about the film’s script and modify it in any way?
V: No, but we can sometimes introduce new ideas through animation. As long as we satisfy the story and emotional requirements of a shot as dictated by the director, we are often free to come up with ideas for acting or jokes.
E: Do you use motion capture in Pixar?
V: Never
E: The best and the worst of Pixar
V: It’s hard to say the best. The people and the movies, I guess. The worst? It’s not Pixar’s fault, but I’m never satisfied with my own work.
E: After Pixar, what would you like to do?
V: Rest. And maybe teach.
E: Would you like to participate in big productions (not strictly 3D) like The Matrix, The Lord Of The Rings…?
V: If the story was good. The problem with these kinds of productions, though, is that they require too many hours of work per week. Pixar is much more accommodating to family life.
E: Your favourite animator
V: Milt Kahl
E: Your favourite 3d shortfilm?
V: Tim Tom
E: Which is the character you would had been pleased to animate?
V: Buzz Lightyear
E: Which is your professional goal? Where is the limit for you?
V: I don’t know. I’ve still got a lot to learn. I will wait to see what opportunities present themselves.
E: Who has te best salaries: an animator, a modeller, a texture maker...
V: I don’t know for sure, but I would guess animators. Of course it depends on skill and experience.
E: · Which is your favourite 3D movie?
V: The Incredibles.
E: ¿Your classic favourite film
V: Roman Holiday
E: Which is the last book you have read? And also the last movie you have seen?
V: I’m reading “In the Blink of an Eye” by Walter Murch right now, and I saw “Lost in Translation” again.
E: Which is your favourite comic?
V: I haven’t read comics in years, but I liked Sandman a lot.
E: Which is the japanesse comic you would like to see in the cinemas?
V: I don’t know any manga that have not been made into movies yet.
E: Your favourite action hero
V: Indiana Jones
E: · If someone that wants to be a professional like you asks you for an advice… what will you say?
V: I get this question all the time, so I made some pages on my web site for it: http://www.hash.com/users/navone/HTML/AlienSongFAQ.htm#advice http://www.hash.com/users/navone/HTML/Links_3D.htm#career
E: Muchas gracias Victor por dedicarnos tu tiempo. Seguiremos pendiente de tu carrera profesional, ¡suerte! Esmaya.org Link: www.navone.org |
